To help students overcome the educational challenges brought about by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Kankakee Community College (KCC) Foundation committed to providing laptop computers for online learning.
In March, Kankakee Community College began holding online classes because of the coronavirus, the Daily Journal reported in July. The Foundation responded by providing $5,000 for the purchase of laptop computers that students could borrow for the remainder of the semester at no charge. Students who continued and took classes during the Summer semester were allowed to keep on using their computers. The college chipped in and lent hot spots to those students who had no internet connection.
The Foundation has also put together a fundraiser called "Give Day" to help meet ongoing student needs. Scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 27, the event seeks to raise money from school alumni and other donors to supply loaner laptops and hot spots to students who need them for the semesters going forward.
"Our goal is to give all KCC students who have demonstrated need the resources to ensure their success," Kelly Myers, executive director of the Foundation, said in a release.
Matching-funds gifts for the first $5,000 raised have already been pledged. For information on making a donation, visit https://foundation.kcc.edu/giveday.
