Olivet Nazarene University recently announced the appointment of Dr. Dale Hathaway to the position of Associate Dean of the Martin D. Walker School of STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics).

The Associate Dean for the School of STEM provides leadership and vision for the Departments of Biology, Chemistry and Geosciences, Engineering, and Mathematics and Computer Science, and seeks creative ways that these four departments can collaborate and increase external funding for their programs. Dr. Hathaway will officially begin his new duties in August 2022.

Dr. Hathaway joined the Olivet faculty in 1989 as a professor of mathematics. In addition to his classroom teaching over the past 33 years, Dr. Hathaway was the department chair for thirteen years (2007-2020) and served as the interim Associate Dean for the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) during the 2020-21 academic year. Other leadership positions have included 21 years as an Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus leader and six years as an AP reader; serving on the board of the Illinois Section of the Mathematical Association of America, including two years as chair; and offering his expertise as an external reviewer of various mathematics and actuarial science programs.

Among Dr. Hathaway’s scholarly achievements are the publication of a textbook, Mathematics for the Modern World, the third edition of which appeared in 2011; authoring a book entitled Mathematical Devotionals, to be released later in 2022; and receiving Olivet’s 2011 Samuel L. Mayhugh Award for Scholarly Excellence.

Dr. Hathaway earned his B.S. degree in mathematics from Eastern Nazarene College, before earning both his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics from Boston University. He is married to Heather, who has worked many years in Olivet’s Office of Student Financial Services.  Together they have three adult children.
