5 Reasons to Participate in Speed Networking

52

You’ve heard of speed dating, but what about speed networking? While we are not looking to play matchmaker here, you may want to still consider meeting new professionals in the community while enjoying the same type of fun.

Here are five reasons why you should participate in the Young Professionals Network (YPN) Speed Networking event!

1. Say goodbye to comfort zones!

We all know people who may be a little shy or do not consider themselves to be a people person. That may even be yourself which is perfectly fine. Here is where your comfort zone ends. Introducing yourself and taking the time to meet new people puts you on the fast track to becoming more confident and getting out of your comfort zone. Because it is fast paced, you won’t be with just one person for long. You will quickly start to get comfortable talking to the next person, and then the next person. You got this!

2. Grow your network.

The YoungProfessionals Network (YPN) with the Kankakee County Chamber of Commerce knows the importance of connecting with one another. This event hits close to home. Why? Speed networking is a fun way to build up your contact list! Think about how many people you talk to in one day. Then, think about how much time you spent talking to that person. How did you meet them? What did you learn about them when you first met? What story or personal experience did you share or remember? Do you stay in touch with this person? Now, multiply this by 30-40 people! Imagine your network growing by 40 people in under an hour which could lead to future partnerships, future projects, future clients, and more!

3. Enhance your relationships.

Typically following a speed networking event, you review the business cards you received. Here is your reminder. Do not forget to bring your business cards! Out of all the people you connected with during speed networking, guess what? You’ve probably guessed correctly. They have their own network as well. This gives you the potential to enhance the relationships you already started to build upon. There could be a situation where you need assistance or would like to collaborate on a future project. Many professionals would agree that while their original contact was the person they had in mind, another professional was given by that person as a suggestion and the project was still a big success. Never burn your bridges!

4. Straight to the point.

If you’re one of those people who doesn’t like small talk, speed networking is for you. There is no time for casual conversation. The goal of speed networking is to meet as many people as possible in a certain amount of time leaving no room for stale jokes, awkward moments, or dead silence. Getting straight to the point is key. “Who are you? What do you do? Awesome. Here is a little about myself. Here is my contact information.” That’s it. Keep it simple.

5. Have fun.

Needless to say, the last reason is pretty obvious. Have fun! If you have never attended a speed networking event, come out for a fun and unique experience. Who can say they met and talked to 40 new people in 45 minutes? Now, you can! Register for the Young Professional Network (YPN) speed networking event now before slots are filled! Share with someone who would like to go with you. We will see you there! Register here.
