FIRST-HALF RUN LIFTS TIGERS PAST ST. AMBROSE | Jackson Harvey | CC0 https://d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net/f/g/bqww70dpwh5zvr/IMG_3976_2-2.jpg
The Olivet Nazarene University men's basketball team used a late run in the first half to roll to a 78-60 win at St. Ambrose Wednesday evening.
A slow start for the Tigers allowed the Fighting Bees (3-10, 2-7 CCAC) to keep pace early. And when St. Ambrose knocked down a three-pointer, the Tigers trailed 17-13 over halfway through the first half.
But this is where the Tigers flipped the script.
ONU scored 17 unanswered points to blow the game wide open. Five Tigers scored during the run, with Tyler Schmidt dropping in eight of his 13 first-half points during the stretch. When St. Ambrose eventually snapped their six-minute scoring drought, ONU was already up by double-digits, entering the locker room with a 36-26 lead.
Caleb Swearingen and Barik Olden each scored layups to open the scoring in the second half, and when Sam Emich hit a three-pointer near the midway point, the Tigers led by 22. The outcome was never in doubt from there.
ONU shot at a better than 53-percent clip while limiting St. Ambrose to 38.2-percent shooting from the floor. The Tigers also outrebound the Bees 42-27.
In total, 10 Tigers found the scoresheet in the contest. Schmidt led the Tigers in scoring, finishing with 22 points on 10-of-19 shooting. He has scored over 20 points in nine-straight games.
Landon Pflederer and Olden scored 15 and 12, respectively, in ONU's first consecutive win since their seven-game win streak in November.
The win improves ONU to 13-5 overall and 8-2 in the CCAC.
