At its Feb.  6 meeting, the City of Kankakee council honored Gloria Dowdy, a member of the Economic and Community Development Agency on the occasion of her retirement after 22 years of service to the city.

Barbi Watson, executive director of the ECDA, who has worked with Dowdy since 2019, addressed council to list Dowdy's accomplishments.

Watson told council that since Dowdy joined the Department of Housing in 2001, "she has helped to rehabilitate more than a thousand homes."

Watson explained that from painting walls and updating fixtures to installing energy-efficient appliances and ensuring proper insulation, her work has transformed neighborhoods throughout Kankakee.

Watson said that Dowdy's commitment to hard work and kind nature have endeared her to everyone who has worked alongside her.

Members of council and her ECDA co-workers gave Dowdy a standing ovation and thanked her for all that she had done for the community.

In other business, council discussed the appointment of Dawn Landwehr to replace retiring Mary Ryan Norwell as in-house counsel. Landwehr was to start her new role on Feb 13, and was to shadow Norwell before she fully retires from her post Feb. 24.
