Robin Kelly, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Illinois' 2nd district, shared her reflections and legislative actions through a series of tweets on June 2, 2025. These messages highlight her commitment to addressing gun violence and supporting the LGBTQI+ community.
On June 2, Kelly commemorated Hadiya Pendleton's birthday with a tweet reflecting on the young woman's life, which was tragically cut short by gun violence. She stated, "Hadiya Pendleton should be turning 28 today—but her life was cut short when she was fatally shot in a park." Kelly joined Pendleton's parents and survivors for a balloon release event to honor lives lost to gun violence.
In another tweet posted shortly thereafter, Kelly noted that Hadiya’s loved ones initiated the Wear Orange campaign as an action against gun violence. "Today, I introduced the Wear Orange Resolution to honor Hadiya and recognize June as Gun Violence Awareness Month," she wrote, mentioning collaboration with Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth.
Later that day, Kelly turned her attention to Pride Month in a tweet, expressing solidarity with the LGBTQI+ community. She declared support by stating: "I see you. I see your power. And I will fight for your rights against Republican attacks." Kelly reaffirmed her role as an ally in Congress during #PrideMonth.
Since joining Congress in 2013 after replacing Jesse Jackson Jr., Robin Kelly has been an advocate for progressive causes including gun control and LGBTQI+ rights. Born in New York City in 1956 and now residing in Matteson, Illinois, she brings extensive experience from both national politics and previous service in the Illinois House of Representatives from 2003 to 2007.
