Illinois' Governors State University and Joliet Junior College will receive five-year federal grants of more than $400,000 each to expand programs that support low-income students, U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly (D-IL) announced last week.

"The federal funds will help keep students on track toward completing their degrees by expanding and improving academic and career path guidance services,” Kelly said.

Governors State University President Elaine Maimon said the school will use the $426,027 in grant funds to improve students' transition to junior year, increase overall retention and increase the number of students earning a bachelor's degree.

Joliet Junior College will use its $413,956 grant to further develop its Progressive Pathways to Student Success Program, President Debra Daniels said. The program offers students online information and coaching. Daniels said the grant also will help the college invest in technology that customizes student outreach, as well as improve existing systems that help students develop a career path.

Both grants were awarded through the U.S. Department of Education's Strengthening Institutions Program.
