U.S. Sens. Mark Kirk (R-IL) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) introduced a bill on Tuesday to save taxpayers money by trimming government waste and increasing administrative efficiency.
The Government Transformation Act (GTA) would create a seven-member task force to comb through the federal government for opportunities to cut, streamline and save. Kirk said the group would perform its analysis across six categories, such as program evaluation, effectiveness, efficiency, consolidation, reform and best practices.
"By eliminating outdated and underutilized programs like agencies and offices that print documents already found online, we can save taxpayers millions,” Kirk said. “This bipartisan bill is a step toward reducing government waste and inefficiency.”
The GTA would be a complement to Kirk's Just Google It Act, which would eliminate the National Technical Information Service. The agency was founded more than 60 years ago to be a centralized source of government, business, scientific and engineering documents. It currently keeps a catalog of 3 million publications in 350 subjects, many of which are printed and sold, even though much of its data can also be found online paper-free. Kirk said the agency costs $170 million annually.
