Kankakee passes tax levy, honors football team

The Kankakee City Council approved the city's 2015/2016 tax levy at a Dec. 21 meeting.

The levy will cover the city's general fund and overall operations.

The council began the meeting by inviting coaches and players from the Bishop McNamara football team to sign a resolution honoring their state championship win. Coach Rich Zinanni described the team's run to the council.

"This is very much a thrill for all of us up here and especially for a hometown boy like me to be able to do this for the city," Zinanni said. "It’s been a long time since our last one and it is such a great feeling, and it’s because of the dedication of my coaching staff and the hard work of these young men and the determination. Once we got to the playoffs, we really were on fire and, ah, as you look back on it, it’s kind of easy but when you’re going through it, it’s really nerve wracking. So anyway, this is a tremendous honor, and we are very grateful for that so thank you very much."

The council passed an ordinance allowing city authorities to destroy weapons collected as evidence during a homicide, suicide or aggravated battery case once the investigation is complete.

The council also approved agreements with the International Union of Operating Engineers 399 for lab analysis and sewer operations.
