County Buildings and Grounds Committee shuffles office spaces

Kankakeecountybuilding

The Kankakee County Buildings and Grounds Committee discussed moving the locations of two county offices at its Dec. 9 meeting.

After a lengthy discussion of various options, the committee motioned to relocate the treasurer's office into the county's current early voting room but could not agree on a final plan due to the fact that they must also find a new space for an early voting room, which the county still requires.

With commissioners growing frustrated and unable to solve the puzzle, the committee voted to require the involved department heads to generate a passable solution with the help of an architect.

The committee also approved a new lease agreement for the Grundy/Livingston/Kankakee Workforce Board that will relocate the board to the county's Finance Department offices on a year-to-year basis beginning in February.

The board's lease on its current office space south of the county building expires at the end of this month. The new arrangement will include a $700/month rent payment to the county in exchange for 623 square feet of office space. The county's federal funds from the Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act will pay for the move.

The Workforce board facilitates a number of adult learning and youth services agreements with Kankakee County Community College, Joliet Junior College, Futures and Garden of Prayer.

The committee also agreed to look deeper into developing a plan for the third floor of the county courthouse, which has been empty for the past three years.
