Momence Mayor Mick Porter announced Monday that construction on the 100 block of East Washington Street will begin May 2, or sooner, if weather allows.
The start date was announced following a meeting between the Illinois Department of Transportation and Engineer Jake Holmbeck of Baxter Woodman Engineering.
The $370,000 project is expected to improve curbs, sidewalks and the overall streetscape over a 30-day work period. Porter said the project has taken three years to come to fruition.
Meanwhile, water main construction on the south side of the village could begin as soon as March. The $1.7 million project will cost Momence residents $7 month on their water bills for the next 20 years. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency required Momence officials to raise the money through increased rates in order to guarantee the repayment of the loan funding the project.
