Kankakee County’s Planning, Zoning and Agriculture Committee met Jan. 20 at county offices to review ongoing issues facing residents in the wake of computer glitches, quarry quarrels and recent nearby flooding.
Delbert Skimerhorn raised the topic of floods pervading the area in late December of 2015. Much damage was observed in Iroquois County, where 13 properties endured damage severe enough to warrant razing or relocation. According to FEMA standards, the structures ranked as “severe repetitive loss properties,” having lost over 50 percent of their market value.
Skimerhorn also updated the committee regarding computer problems. The GIS department hired Cloudpoint Geographics of Roanoke, Illinois, to troubleshoot areas of weakness, analyze and back up the system successfully.
Participants discussed at length an ongoing issue pertaining to the Singleton stone quarry. Residents in the eastern portion of Kankakee County had expressed concern over sediment allegedly being dumped into the Kankakee River from the Indiana side, bringing to light the surprising discovery that authority over the river is “divided” based on the state line and causing the Illinois attorney general’s office to file a legal action in 2015.
New business included the announcement of 10 openings of various county committees: two each on the Historic Preservation Commission and ZBA, and six on the regional planning commission.
Kankakee County Administration offices are located at 189 E. Court St.
