Kankakee ends park rental freebies for commissioners

Judicial appeal

The days of Kankakee Valley Park District Board commissioners getting free park-facility rentals are over, according to the Edgar County Watchdogs (ECW).

The board unanimously voted on June 26 to eliminate the practice of members receiving two free park-facility rentals per year, the ECW reported on its Illinois Leaks website.

The text of ordinance 175 as posted on the website states that commissioners had been able to do the free rentals “for many years” and that the perk “had previously been deemed a minimal benefit provided” to the commissioners.

The ECW first reported on the perks after they were revealed in the minutes of a meeting in  January. The group argued that such benefits were in violation of code.

The group applauded the recent decision to eliminate the perks.

“This is a clear example of how a local public body, when confronted with allegations of statute violations, should act to cure the problems presented,” the ECW posted.
