BOURBONNAIS POLICE DEPARTMENT: Scam Alert/Unemployment Benefits

Bourbonnais Police Department issued the following announcement on Oct. 31.

A large scale scam involving phony unemployment benefits claims have been reported to area Law Enforcement in the past two weeks. Criminals, possibly based overseas, are filing claims for benefits, using the personal information of people who have not lost their jobs. Most people learn they’re affected when they get a notice in the mail from their state unemployment benefits office or their employer about their supposed application of benefits. A few steps you can take to help your business respond quickly:

Check your Credit Report

Alert your workforce. Tell your employees about the scam

Report the fraud. Check your state unemployment benefits website (www2.illinois.gov)

Suggest employees visit IdentityTheft.gov
