RIVERSIDE HEALTH CARE: Riverside welcomes Michigan Urologist for training

Healthrecap

Riverside Health Care issued the following announcement on Apr. 29.

Riverside Urologist Michael Gambla, MD, recently hosted Diane Young, MD, from Traverse City, MI, for training performing laser surgery. Dr. Gambla, who has been performing holmium laser enucleation of the prostate for several years, provided Dr. Young with valuable insights and professional tips on administering the procedure.

“Anytime I can lend my expertise to others in my field, I enjoy the opportunity,” said Dr. Gambla. “Our profession is a constant collaborative approach, whether within the walls of our own hospital or with others throughout our region and country.”

Dr. Young is part of Bay Area Urology in Traverse City, located in the northern part of Northern Michigan. Her practice is part of Munson Healthcare, which includes nine hospitals that serve 540,000 residents in 30 counties.

The holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) is a treatment for men that uses a laser to remove tissue that blocks urine flow through the male prostate. HoLEP has been described as the gold standard for the treatment of an enlarged prostate (BPH), according to at least one academic journal. During the procedure, a patient is given general anesthesia, and the doctor removes the blockage by cutting it away with a laser. By using a laser, Dr. Gambla is able to achieve far better precision resulting in fewer complications.

“I find that HoLEP procedures have far better long-term successes and often have better recovery times than other approaches,” said Dr. Gambla. “Being able to share how to perform this procedure best with other doctors helps give more patients access.”

With BPH, men experience difficulty emptying their bladder, an increased need to urinate, and incontinence. Treatments range from medication to minimally invasive surgery like HoLEP.
