On this day in 1905, the Cherry Mine Disaster took place in Cherry, Illinois. Nearly 250 miners lost their lives in the incident. The public response following this tragedy resulted in the implementation of more stringent fire and safety regulations in Illinois mines and led to the creation of the state's first Workmen's Compensation Act.
