FOIA Request to Iroquois County Sheriff Regarding Inmates with ICE Detainers on February 18, 2025.
In a bid to promote transparency and accountability in government institutions, we at Kankakee Times have submitted a request under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) to the Iroquois County Sheriff. The request seeks access to documents and records that show persons committed to their facility who have had an Immigration Detainer issued by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency lodged against them since January 29, 2024.
Additionally, we are seeking information about requests from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security regarding civil enforcement which are reportable under the TRUST Act and/or the Illinois VOICES Act. We are also interested in Immigration Detainers received from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that fall under these same acts.
As a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we believe it is our duty to hold public institutions accountable and provide transparency for the public. As such, we've requested a fee waiver as a media professional for this information.
We are supported in our efforts by The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a non-profit corporation dedicated to investigating state and federal governmental agencies and leveraging Freedom of Information and Sunshine Laws to ensure government actions are transparent and accessible to the American electorate.
Our goal is always to inform our readership with accurate information about what's happening within their community's government institutions. This request is just one part of our ongoing commitment towards that goal.
