Bourbonnais Police Committee considers local citations versus state tickets

Bourbonnaispolice

The Village of Bourbonnais Police Committee held its regular meeting Nov. 10.

Chief Phelps raised the question of village police issuing ordinance citations for certain traffic offenses that would normally get state-level tickets. Phelps said that by issuing ordinance citations for violations of ordinances the village already has on the books for speeding, following too closely, improper lane usage and others, the village could save labor costs, fuel costs and officer patrol time.

The ordinances would also be a way of redirecting some of the money from fines to the village instead of sending them to the state courts, where they are often dismissed. The issue was left open for further discussion.

Chief Phelps also reminded village officials of the ceremony being held Nov. 24 at the Bourbonnais Fire Protection District to honor Officers Garcia and Boudreau and Telecommunicator Hennessey -- all of whom were involved in responding to a car accident in August where CPR was able to save a teenager from dying.

The chief also asked the board for money to purchase new tazers. Village Attorney Dunn said his family will donate $3,000 to pay for two new tasers.
