The Kankakee County Court Services Committee held its regular meeting Nov. 17.
The new quarry has faced controversy for its potential impact on the Kankakee River, which drains the quarry's drainage ditch of 12 million to 52 million gallons of water per day.
Jamie Boyd described a recent trip he took with officials from state environmental agencies to Singleton Quarry in Indiana to inspect the quarry's impact on nearby water levels. Boyd said pollution concerns aside, there are still ongoing questions about the sediment being deposited by the quarry runoff.
Boyd said there is also a need for there to be an agreement between Illinois and the Indiana company about shutting off the drainage system's pumps if the Illinois side of the Kankakee reaches flood stage.
In other business, Tom Latham said the county's drug court auction succeeded at reaching its goal of $12,000. Boyd said later that the money will fund drug testing for defendants for the next year.
In its department report, the Probation Department announced it will be open during lunch hour and will stay open until 6:30 p.m. one night every month. The department is collaborating with the advocacy group Mothers Against Drunk Driving to hold a victim impact panel highlighting the dangers of driving drunk.
Chief Judge Kick was absent.
