The Bourbonnais village board unanimously approved a feasibility study for the proposed I-57 development project Feb. 1.
The study will be conducted by the design firm Ratio, which will craft several design scenarios that will include preliminary plans, maps and other data for village officials to choose between. Ratio will also propose ideas for developing commercial activity along the new corridor.
The $46 million project is expected to improve mobility and boost the economy through Bourbonnais and nearby communities by creating a new interchange. Officials have said the two to three year construction phase will create a number of construction jobs, and planners are also keen on developing an industrial park near the new interchange.
Construction was expected to begin last spring.
Village Administrator Michael Van Mill said other villages whose participation would be required for the project to proceed are also in the process of authorizing feasibility studies for their portions of the road.
