Momence has joined the Illinois Debt Recovery Program from the state Comptroller’s Office.
This program will identify individuals who have an unpaid debt to the city through parking tickets, traffic fines, ordinance violation fines or other court fees.
If these individuals are to receive any state tax refund, lottery payout, commercial payout or state payroll check, the amount of the debt will automatically be withheld by the city.
After a debtor is notified, he or she has 60 days to protest and claim the sum is being wrongly withheld. Collections officials say the program has proved effective over the past three years since it began.
