The Bourbonnais Nucor plant has received the $180 million merchant bar expansion project in what a state representative says will be an economic boost to the area.

The win comes as Nucor, a steel manufacturer, is set to expand its mill, which will result in an increase in jobs to the Kankakee area, Rep. Lindsay Parkhurst (R-Kankakee) said in a press release.

“It is satisfying and exciting to see our efforts effectively assist our area in receiving the Nucor merchant bar expansion,” Parkhurst said in the release.

Parkhurst expects the mill expansion to bring in some 100 jobs to her constituents in the 79th District area.

There were many supporters of the deal, including the utilities that assisted making it happen.

“Utility partners ComEd and Nicor Gas are commended for working to ensure this investment came to fruition,” Parkhurst said in the release.  “I thank Nucor for its commitment to their team members, our community, and our state.”
