Aunt Marthas issued the following announcement on Aug. 8.
Aunt Martha’s Health & Wellness has been awarded a $13, 699 Access to Care Grant from Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children: The Foundation of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (HSHC). This funding will go towards Aunt Martha’s Dental Services. This will help Aunt Martha’s Health & Wellness support HSHC’s mission to provide all children, regardless of financial circumstances, with early and ongoing dental care.
“Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children is proud to support Aunt Martha’s Health & Wellness and the work that they do to provide Dental Homes for children from families that cannot afford dental care,” said HSHC President Dr. Nick Rogers. “For these children, the opportunity to receive consistent, compassionate dental care can open the door to a lifetime of good dental health.”
“Aunt Martha’s would like to thank HSHC for this grant that will support Aunt Martha’s mission to provide a complete and comprehensive dental home for pediatric patients using a care coordination approach and integrated health home model,” said President & CEO Raul Garza.
The HSHC Grant
Since 2010, HSHC has awarded Access to Care grants to community organizations that support the Foundation’s belief that every child deserves a Dental Home—a place to receive consistent, compassionate dental care. HSHC funds programs that support local service initiatives and provide oral health care to underserved children and children with limited access to care in their communities.
Aunt Martha’s Health & Wellness is among thirteen organizations, selected to receive an HSHC Access to Care grant in 2018.
“The depth and quality of grant applications demonstrate the valuable work being done by pediatric dentists nationwide. It is a challenge to select from so many wonderful organizations that provide excellent care in their communities,” said Rogers. “Aunt Martha’s Health & Wellness stood out for its exceptional work, proven success and commitment to helping children in the community.”
Aunt Martha’s Health & Wellness provides quality health and wellness services to the most medically complex individuals at a low cost with health services in physical health, behavioral health, and dental care. 97% of Aunt Martha’s patients are low income, with 3,000 homeless children and adults served, and 70,000 patients and clients served annually.
The Importance of Pediatric Dental Care
Nearly one in three children ages 2 to 5 in the United States are affected by tooth decay according to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD). Children among low-income and minority families also have a disproportionally higher incidence of oral health issues including a rapid form of tooth decay. This decay can trigger a domino effect of pain, malnutrition and quality of life issues. However, it is nearly 100 percent preventable with access to a Dental Home.
