A program developed by an Illinois couple has provided Pembroke Township youths with lessons and pride over the last 20 years.

Brenda and Reginald Stewart founded and coordinated a hands-on approach to agriculture that is not only fund but instills lessons and values.

“Basically, our Young Growers camps teach boys and girls how to farm, grow their own food, and have fun doing it,” the Stewarts told commYOUnity.

Helping facilitate the program is the Kankakee County Health Department, which worked in conjunction with the Community Foundation of Kankakee River Valley to provide a grant that purchased tools which allowed campers to work a patch of land.

“With agriculture and the right tools, our youth learn how to sustain and thrive in our community,” the Stewarts saidd.

Working together, those participating in the program leave the values of teamwork, responsibility, accountability and a plethora of other attributes. Not only do campers have the opportunity to plant goods but the pride in seeing it grow.
