Kankakee County Sheriff issued the following announcement on Jan. 14.
After the results of today’s vote regarding HB 3653, or as some are referring to …the anti-law enforcement bill, it is an understatement to say that I am extremely disappointed. I am disappointed that the elected legislators that swear an oath to seek out our best interests would desperately work to manipulate a bill in the early morning hours in an effort to secretly pass it due to it being so overwhelmingly controversial. This legislation will undoubtedly make our communities less safe for years to come. I am urging Governor Pritzker to veto this legislation and allow our lawmakers time to work with law enforcement officials to draft a comprehensive reform bill that makes sense and that all the stakeholders can agree on, with the ultimate goal of making all of the citizens of Illinois, including our law enforcement officers, safer.
Despite everything that has transpired on this historic day, I remain firmly proud to be a law enforcement officer. I continue to hold the profession, and those that work in it, in extremely high regard. I continue to trust my brothers and sisters in blue and realize that the overwhelming majority of them possess the most ideal characteristics of man-kind. Locally, I rest assured that the men & women of the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office (both in the Corrections Division and in the Sworn Division) will remain steadfast in their commitment and mission to maintain the safety of our communities and those within them, as well as to continue to defend the Constitution of the State of Illinois and of the United States of America.
