A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Iroquois County Clerk's office on January 14, 2025, by us at Kankakee Times. The request sought information about the candidates running for the upcoming 2025 Consolidated Elections.
Specifically, we asked for a list of candidates that includes their names, the dates they filed their candidacy, and the offices they are running for. As a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, access to such public records is crucial in fulfilling our professional responsibilities.
We believe in holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. In light of this role in disseminating information, we have requested a fee waiver as a media professional.
The Illinois Freedom of Information Act (5 ILCS 140) underpins our request. This act allows for full or partial disclosure of previously unreleased information and documents controlled by the United States government.
As we continue our commitment to report on local governmental affairs accurately and comprehensively, we eagerly await a response from the Iroquois County Clerk's office regarding this request.
