Momence Mayor Mick Porter offered details Monday on the city's new $7 water fee.
Porter said the city has received a number of calls from residents wanting clarification on the new charge.
The fee, Porter said, is being used to pay off a loan the city took out with the Illinois EPA to pay for the installation of a new, larger water main for service to the South Side of the city, where viable wells have proven difficult to find.
The $7 flat fee for all residents will go toward the 20 year payback period on the loan.
Porter emphasized that all steps of the process were posted as they happened with several days notice, including public hearings, and that the city has been working on the issue since 2013.
The new main will run under the Kankakee River to Harvard Street. City officials expect work to begin by the end of the month and be finished by the end of June.
