Herscher CUSD Board of Education upholds student suspension

The Herscher Community Unified School District 2 Board of Education met Oct. 24 to uphold a student suspension.

Here are the meeting's minutes, as provided by the board:

Special Board Meeting, October 24, 2016 at 6:00 p.m.

The meeting was called to order at 6:00 PM by Board President D. Emling.

Roll call: P. Daly, D. Emling, J. Hastings, D. Huizenga, J. Powers, D. Ruder, S. Sullivan, Supt. Decman, Herscher High School Principal B. Elliot, Herscher High Assistant Principal J. Heck and other visitors.

A motion at 6:00 p.m. to enter into closed session for the purpose of student discipline hearing was made by D. Ruder and was seconded by J. Hastings. P. Daly, aye; D. Emling, aye; J. Hastings, aye; D. Huizenga, aye; J. Powers, aye; D. Ruder, aye; S. Sullivan, aye.

A motion at 7:15 p.m. to come out of closed session was made by D. Ruder and was seconded by J. Powers.

A motion was made by P. Daly and was seconded by S. Sullivan to uphold the 10- day suspension of Student A and to hold in abeyance expulsion on the following conditions: a copy of the negative results of the drug test on Oct. 21st are received by the school, student is not permitted to attend any extracurricular activities for the remainder of the 2016-17 school year, student must meet with HHS guidance counselor or social worker at least once a week for the remainder of the 2016-17 school year, student must not participate in any activity that would necessitate a suspension from school for the remainder of the 2016-17 school year and student’s parking privilege has been revoked so therefore will need to utilize district bus service or be transported to school by parent or grandparent. A motion at 7:20 p.m. to enter into closed session for the purpose of negotiations and building safety and security was made by D. Ruder and was seconded by J. Hastings. P. Daly, aye; D. Emling, aye; J. Hastings, aye; D. Huizenga, aye; J. Powers, aye; D. Ruder, aye; S. Sullivan, aye.

A motion at 8:45 p.m. to come out of closed session was made by D. Ruder and was seconded by J. Hastings.
